While You Wait: What to do when COVID shatters your dream of being a mom in 2020
Mar 29, 2020
While COVID is disrupting all our lives, for someone struggling with infertility, it’s not just scary and inconvenient; it means even more heartbreaking delays to motherhood. As IFV transfers are cancelled and treatments postponed, you may feel a range of emotions from anger to hopelessness.
But don’t give up! Here are some things you can do while you wait that will increase your chance of success with IVF or possibly lead to a natural pregnancy.
- Get Your DNA Tested – Our genes are not our destiny, but they do make us more or less susceptible to things like disease, toxins, and even infertility. Some people have glitches in their genes that make conception or maintaining a pregnancy difficult even with IFV. The good news is that we can turn off genes that work against your fertility and turn on genes that work for your fertility. Eating the right foods, taking the right supplements and decreasing your exposure to environmental toxins can change how your genes are expressed. Both partners need to check their DNA.
- Check Your Iodine Status – Iodine used to be the universal healer until penicillin came on the market and a study on rats suggested it was dangerous. The study has been debunked, but here we are over 50 years later still afraid of iodine and very much deficient. Iodine is essential for maintaining a pregnancy and for the baby’s brain development. If you have suffered a miscarriage, you absolutely need to check your iodine status. The best way is with an iodine loading test which you can find at hakalalabs.com.
- Avoid Toxins – We are bombarded with toxins in our environment and food. Some bodies just can’t process it all and this can prevent conception. Start with eating real food and avoiding processed vegetable oils (soy, corn, cottonseed, canola and even grapeseed oils) and GMOs which are found in soy, corn, cotton, canola, papaya, summer squash, alfalfa and sugar beets. Consider ditching the nail salon and doing your own nails at home with a non-toxic polish. Get rid of your dryer sheets, avoid plastic as much as possible (especially when heated), Teflon cookware and make sure you aren’t using weed killer in the yard, particularly glyphosate. Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
These are very trying times for us all and especially for those dreaming of the day they get to hold a baby in their arms. If you’ve struggled with infertility, DNA and iodine testing could give you some answers and help you create a solid plan for getting and staying pregnant.
